An Evening with NYC's Emily Schoen

Join Open Doors Dance Festival for an exciting evening with Emily Schoen as she guides the audience through her choreography process through the use of lecture, demonstration, and audience participation.

Emily Schoen is a Wisconsin-born, New York City based dancer and choreographer. As a choreographer, she has received the Gibney Dance boo-koo grant for emerging artist in NYC, Princess Grace Fellowship nomination by METdance in Houston, an emerging artist residency from the Catskill Mountain Foundation, and was selected as a choreographer-in-residence for (M)mix at Marymount Manhattan College. She has set original works on Santa Barbara Dance Theater, METdance in Houston, Long Island Dance Projects, and various training programs including: Skidmore University, Mid-Pacific Institute in Hawaii, East Carolina University, and the Hartt School in Connecticut.

Her company, Schoen Movement Company, is a three-time invitee to Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Festival and has presented original work at WestFest Top Floor, Greenspace, Steps on Broadway, and Gibney Dance. Emily conceived and created Schoen Movement Company’s dance film series: Ten Tiny Dances with the partnership of Nel Shelby Productions. One of the films premiered on the big screen at Triskelion Dance Film Lab Festival in Brooklyn in 2015. As a dancer, Emily has worked with Kyle Abraham/Abraham In Motion, the Metropolitan Opera in works by Doug Varone and Mark Morris, and is a current member of Keigwin + Company. Dance Magazine chose Emily as one of their “Top 25 to Watch” in 2011.

Open Doors Dance Festival is a summer dance intensive and festival in Iowa City, Iowa for students ages 12-22.

Open Doors has served as a stepping stone for serious dance students looking to make the jump into pre-professional or professional programs all over the country. The connections students have made with faculty at Open Doors have proved invaluable, leading students to some of the most respected names in the industry, including Martha Graham Dance Company, the School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West, Houston Ballet, Oklahoma City Ballet, the Juilliard School, and Point Park University.
