Blaine Cunningham, Tuba

This Masterworks concert features Cedar Rapids native and Grammy-Award Winning composer, Michael Daugherty's "Reflections on the Mississippi," a delightful tuba concerto that will showcase Orchestra Iowa's very own Principal Tuba Blaine Cunningham. Also on the program for the evening is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.

The Tragedy of Carmen

Peter Brook's gripping adaptation brings Bizet's opera back to its origins of sexual intrigue, power and complexity. In this tightly wound one act version, Carmen's embrace of her dark fate is elevated from an act of submission to an assertion of power.

Sam Hao Huang, Tenor

presented by Verdi Center for Music & Art Exchange
and Iowa City Area Chinese Association

Sam Hao Huang is the voice professor and also a judge member for International Vocal Competition. He has a Doctor of Arts degree from Stuttgart Conservatory of Music in Germany. In 2014, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Iowa School of Music.

The Coralville Center for the Performing Arts is hosting its biggest party of the season and the entire community is invited. Set in turn-of-the century New York City and based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged "newsies," who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.

Adapted from the Louisa May Alcott classic novel about four sisters who come of age just after the American Civil War, Adamo's opera focuses on Jo March's resistance to the passage of time.
