The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz June 28-30, 2024

America’s most beloved film comes to colorful life onstage! When a tornado whisks Dorothy away to the magical land of Oz, she must make friends, face her fears, and discover how good it is to go home.

Introduce your kids to the Scarecrow,  the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Wizard himself in this magical hour-long adventure.

This Young Footliters production is presented by children in grades K–12.

Audition Details:

Casting is open to actors in kindergarten through 12th grade for the 2023-24 School Year. We are creating 150 audition opportunities and will cast approximately 60 actors.

Casting a play is not like filling a track team. We are not looking for the 60 fastest runners, or the 60 best actors and singers. We need kids of all ages and abilities to tell this story, from our smallest six-year-olds to the most experienced eighteen-year-olds. To accomplish this goal, we are opening this audition up to a certain percentage of children from each age bracket.

We anticipate casting approximately 12 students in grades K-2, 30 students in grades 3-6, and 18 students in grades 7-12.

Please make sure you are signing your child up to a time slot designated for their age bracket. If all the slots for their age bracket are full, we will have a waiting list.

Audition Material:

All auditioning students will perform a song and a monologue (if they want solo lines) during their audition. They may be asked to do a short improvisation (no preparation necessary for that).

Preparing for Auditions:

  1. Music Audition:
All students should select and prepare one of the Audition Songs included in the link below. All students will sing from the tracks provided. We will have a system set up to play the tracks. If young students find the Audition Songs challenging, they can choose to sing either Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star or Happy Birthday. Click the link below to access the audition songs. Please print and practice a song of your choice. You may select any song regardless of gender, style, or content. If you do not have access to a printer contact Liz Tracey for assistance.
  2. Reading Audition:
If any student is interested in a solo speaking part, they should memorize a monologue of their choice of 1 minute or less. Students should choose a monologue that shows their ability to create an interesting character. There are books of monologues available online and at most public libraries. There are also monologues available at the "Young Footliters Auditions" stand on the lobby counter in the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts.

Participation Fee & Scholarships:

For students cast in our production, Young Footliters has a $150 participation fee. This fee helps to make our show possible and covers a portion of our production costs such as costumes, sets, props, painting, royalty rights, performance, and rehearsal facilities.

We believe theatre participation should be possible for every student. Young Footliters is committed to providing scholarships to all students who require one, and we never turn away a student for inability to pay participation fees. Please go to for more information.
